The exotic Art Pad!
Bank-sia is the creative idea of Artist Sobrane.
About the space
Sleep amongst the art in this historic bank turned art gallery. What once would have been the managers quarters of the Westpac Bank has been thoughtfully renovated to provide modern amenities with historic charm. Perfect for any seeking a unique getaway.
Offering elegant accommodation with an art filled experience in the center of Mount Barker.
The accommodation has art to purchase and enjoy. Owner artist Sobrane's drive has always been to bring art into our everyday world and opening in Mount Barker has inspired her afresh in creating art filled with local wildflowers to experience. The heritage building, a 100 year old bank, was purchased 2 years ago. Its beautiful. Rich Jarrah floorboards throughout, high ceilings, king size bed, ensuite, gorgeous french doors and art, will make this unique stay well worth the experience.
We have thought of everything to make your stay as comfortable as can be.
- One large bedroom complete with very comfy king-size bed, large entrance foyer and uniquely muralled ensuite bathroom. The wardrobe contains a retro fridge, toastie maker, pod coffee machine and kettle. We supply sourdough bread from Mount Barker Bakery and home made apricot jam. Yum!
- You have your very own front porch and garden entrance through a side gate. Its very private and all yours!
- Its elegance in the very heart of mountain country, Mount Barker. The building was originally the Bank of NSW and the accommodation was the bank managers quarters.
- Located within walking distance is Plantagenet Wines for a grazing plate and regional wine or a Plantagenet Hotel 80's feel, pub meal. Both recommended!
Bank-sia is another story in artist Sobrane's Gallery enterprise. The gallery runs the full length of rooms at the front of the building. You are able to use the 20% discount voucher provided on arrival to purchase some of her art.
Sobrane's Recommendations
The Bakery is open from 5am and does a great Soy Chai Latte. On weekends the lineup for a baked good is out the door. It’s a popular spot and a must try when staying in town.
We have some fantastic galleries in Mount Barker. After you have explored the rooms of Sobrane some of my favorite's to check out would be Corkscrew Gallery for timber sculptures and Strike Me Pink for a gallery and plant nursery all in one. https://thebarkerartscene.com/ will have all the information on gallery and mural locations and opening times.
The Great Southern Region, of which we are part, produces around 37% of wine grapes in WA and is known for high quality cool climate varieties. Our family operated cellar doors welcome novice or expert wine drinkers. Plantagenet Wines, Duke’s Vineyard and West Cape Howe Wines are some of the best to get your started. I recommend you try a local Riesling!
Put on your walking shoes to tackle the 5km Granite Sky Walk in the Porongurup National Park. The uphill walk and rock climb to finish is not for the feint hearted but the views from the top are spectacular. Be sure to stop in at Porongurup Inn, Shop & Tearooms while in the area. They do a great burger and also have a small gallery to explore. While unexpected, you will be delighted to find an authentic Thai restaurant at the foothills of the Porongurup Rage. With limited opening hours and a delicious reputation bookings are essential at Maleeya’s, so be sure to include it in your holiday.
The Plantagenet Shire has just open a series of Mountain Bike Trails including one at the Lookout which has stunning views of the Porongurup and Stirling Ranges.
